Last year, American Idol winner Taylor Hicks had the worst opening first week sales for an American Idol winner. This years winner, Jordin Sparks, sold even less than he did. Is this the end of American Idol's dominance? Or just another casualty of our new age recording industry?
Sparks' self titled debut album came in at number 10 on the Billboard 200 with sales of just over 119,000. MTV's 'American Idol Expert' Jim Cantiello isn't sure what happened with Idol's newest star.
"I don't really know what happened," he said. "The thing with 'Idol' is that, with the exception of Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood, once the season was over, nobody really cared about the winner anymore. I wonder if Jordin had released an album [right after the show] if it would have done triple what it did?" Given what he said was the audience's animosity toward beatboxing runner-up Blake Lewis, Cantiello saw Sparks as the "lesser of two evils,"
Her new single was also slow to catch on like the songs of past idol winners, check out Tattoo:

I didn't know who it was when it first came on the radio. I remember thinking, "not bad", that was until I heard the chorus and was reminded that she truly is cookie cutter pop.

If I may make a correction re this: "Last year, American Idol winner Taylor Hicks had the worst opening first week sales for an American Idol winner."
These are the first week numbers for Idols 1 thru 5, and I believe all debuted at #2 except for Kelly, who's cd debuted #1 (with 1,000 fewer cds sold than Taylor, and Fantasia with considerably fewer cds sold the first week)
Kelly….. 297,000 Ruben. . 416,569 Fantasia 239,389 Carrie…. 314,549 Taylor ....298,000
