Secret Documents Reveal Hip Hop Artists Spied on By NYPD

It has been revealed that the New York Police Department "monitored" several hip hop artists in the months leading up to the Republican National Convention in 2004. The particulars were unveiled in 600 pages worth of secret files by the New York Civil Liberties Union, who are currently in the process of suing the city on behalf of demonstrators arrested during questioning. According to these files, Jay-Z, Alicia Keys, and Sean "P.Diddy" Combs were all placed under surveillance in the fall of 2004.
The only thing the three artists had in common, was attending a rally held by the Hip-Hop Summit Action Network to support voter registration in the urban community. "These documents paint a picture of a surveillance program that was broad, clumsy, and often unlawful," said Donna Lieberman, NYCLU Executive Director. "The NYPD failed to differentiate between unlawful behavior and behavior that is not only lawful but should in fact be cherished and protected. Today the public can finally bear witness to that failure."
The documents show that undercover police officers snuck in political meetings, and recording information about activities that were 100% peaceful and lawfuil in nature. NYPD attempted to block these documents from being made public, but a judge ruled in favor of the NYCLU last week.
