This concert happened a verrryy long time ago (Feb. 22) and I'm just now writing about it! Getting to the venue (La Maroquinerie, Paris) was an adventure. It was about 30 min. from where I lived via metro and then it was on a side street after a series of huge hills. But my friend and I made it in time.
When we got there, Lavender Diamond was just starting their set and they were amazing! Her voice was great and they were really friendly and nice. Unfortunately they didn't speak French, but a ton of French people speak English, so I'm sure all were happy.
The venue was pretty small and it had a lower "level" that was like 2 steps down from the rest and then the stage was probably 2 feet off the ground. So after Lavender Diamond ended, it was really easy to get up to the front, which was awesome.
Set list: Crane Wife 3 The Island We Both Go Down Together Engine Driver Billy Liar Legionnaire Shankill Butchers O Valencia 16 Military Wives Crane Wife 1 & 2 Sons & Daughters Encore: Red Right Ankle Cover of "Feels like Making Love" w/Lavender Diamond
The band sounded great! The only thing was that Colin was not chatting it up with the crowd...I think he was a little intimidated by the language barrier, which was definitely unfortunate because he's usually really great with the crowd and this time, it was just kind of like we're playing this song and that's it. But overall, it was amazing! Ugh, but there were these completely obnoxious American girls (probably 14-16 yrs. old) who were drunk and soo loud. And it was embarrassing. I just thought to myself, so this is why French people think Americans are obnoxious...

If you don't know about hype.non-standard.net, I suggest you go there immediately. It's an amazing resource for music junkies. Hype collects all of the music uploaded to blogs and posts them. The files expire (either with time or by the number of users, I don't know), but it's great. I can't tell you how many bands or songs or B-sides that I've discovered on that website.

yes. hype machine is an amazing tool. I use it often
Yeah, tybees posted about this earlier. Not directly, he just happened to mention where he go all of the songs he linked to off of his post. I spent a lot of time there today listening to music I couldn't (read legally) find elsewhere.
Heh, thx for the reference zero. The cool thing about the hype machine right now is that there are literally hundreds of bloggers posting their top songs of the year as we speak, so it's a good time to hear a whole bunch of new music and keep it if you want. I'm totally OD'ing on this stuff right now.
So, first off, if you Mapquest Bill Graham Civic Auditorium, it's quite vague. Get off at Mission, but then you need to flip a bitch and get on Van Ness and turn on Grove from there...Yeah that only took us 40 min. to figure out.
The concert was pretty sweet, but very long. Cat Power opened and Jan Marshall is pretty bad ass. But I don't own her latest album, which was unfortunate because I didn't recognize 90% of what she played...then it took Gnarls Barkley about 45 minutes to get on-stage...in moonsuits!! But my excitement was short lived because I really don't know a lot of Gnarls and I was really just there for The Flaming Lips. About an hour and a half later, The Flaming Lips were on-stage and Wayne was in his bubble walking on the crowd and at midnight, balloons were released from above, it was awesome. Unfortunately, the Civic Center garage (which is underground and very hard to spot) closed at 1 and so we left early to avoid being locked out. Excellent concert though.

What a great show to see, in one of my favorite cities! The Decemberists just played Chicago, but I wasn't fortunate enough to see them.
I really think 'The Crane Wife' is a spectacular album. It is as if all the various elements of the band's previous outings have gelled perfectly on this one.
Incidentally, I've had similar unfortunate experiences in terms of being embarrassed by fellow Americans abroad--of all ages. Many American tourists seem to treat Europe as if it were a Disney theme park, expecting all waiters, hotel staff, etc to cater to them. It makes it all the more difficult for those who are trying hard to assimilate and immerse themselves into the culture, to do so. Very disheartening.
C'est la vie.
Chels, I just saw them in San Francisco last night, right up against the stage, and at one point Colin walked right above me and looked at me and smiled!!!! I've been close to them before but never that close!!! It was an amazing show too! Shara Worden (of My Brightest Diamond) came and did the Laura Veirs vocal parts to "Yankee Bayonet (I Will Be Home Then)"! It was fantastic!!!!!! I miss you!
PS-I just bought my ticket to Switzerland!! Yikes!!!!
