I have not been on Mog in a long, long time! Too busy as an English undergrad and rock n roll drummer, I guess.

So here are some records I would like to recommend that have been spinning on my turntable recently:

ENOCH LIGHT AND THE GLITTERING GUITARS

THE TEARDROP EXPLODES - KILIMANJARO

PATRICE RUSHEN - PIZZAZZ

OPAL - HAPPY NIGHTMARE BABY

Track them down and enjoy them thoroughly! Anyone have any suggestions for me?

Damn, I love this album. I stumbled across it after listening to the 13th Floor Elevators for years. In case you do not know, the 13th Floor Elevators were a really awesome psychedelic/r&b/folk band from Texas in the 1960's. After a decade long hiatus (including a long stay in a mental hospital) Roky Erickson formed this band in the late 70's. This is a terrible analogy, but I would describe the Aliens as a mix of the Dead Boys and AC/DC with a hint of new-wave delivery (maybe?). Roky has a great blues-influenced rock voice, and on this album he yells a lot about monsters, Lucifer, and you guessed it, aliens. Some people I've played it for say it's too "80's dude rock," but fuck 'em, I think it's great. Look for a copy, and see for yourself. I recommend picking up this great compilation which includes a lot of songs from The Evil One as well as plenty of 13th Floor Elevators and soft acoustic Roky solo recordings (which are very, very good!)

Artist: Track: Mrs. Vanderbilt

I have finally gone too far. I actually like a few songs from Paul McCartney's post-Beatles career. I do not even really like much of what the Beatles did after Revolver (I really like about half of the white album). There is not really room in my music taste for such an emotional sap as Sir Paul. But I swear to god, there's a few really, really good songs penned by McCartney in the seventies. I am particularly fond of Mrs. Vanderbilt, Jet, and Junior's Farm. Someone help me please. (In my defense, I have been countering my newfound respect for McCartney with healthy doses of the Seeds and the Electric Prunes. And I turned someone on to La Peste and Atomic Rooster today. All hope is not lost.)

In related pansy-ass news, I have a new appreciation of James Taylor. Fuck his music, but I watched Two Lane Blacktop last night, and his performance is killer! Fuck Vincent Gallo and his Brown Bunny. Viva Monte Hellman and Two Lane Blacktop!

Sounds like you need some tough guy emotional music with a pop sensibility... you got the garage rock going, that's good, some of the softer tracks from Nuggets are a good place to start...then maybe some outlaw era Waylon, Willie, Johnny... ect...

I doubt this will make you fell better, but recently I went to see my brother DJ at a bar in L.A. We ended up dubbing him "DJ Self-Indulgent" after he was told by the bar's owner to play "crowd-pleasers" and instead choose to play the ultimate room-emptier: Paul McCartney's "Temporary Secretary" (from McCartney II).
