I'm a Mog

So, I'm sure you've seen the same thing I have. Everyone throwing lyrics out there that they feel best represent their feelings about the New Year. And of New Year songs the two most likely choices are probably The New Year by Death Cab for Cutie and New Year's Day by U2. Both excellent songs. Music is so awesome the way that it can speak to a moment in your life. It can bring a deeper life to something happening or an understanding to something that you don't quite grasp yet. So let's look at the lyrics to Death Cab's song and how it connects with my New Year experience:so this is the new year.and i don't feel any different. It's funny, I remember the new year being so much more important than it is now. I remember staying up late was so exciting and my most thrilling moment was that midnight countdown where my family would all share a nice glass of sparkling cider.the clanking of crystalexplosions off in the distance (in the distance).I wish there were more of these kinds of things around here. Being a twentysomething year old you are much more likely to hear the thunking of plastic cups and fireworks in the suburbs are certainly looked down on. Sometimes I do wish I lived out in a more open area.so this is the new yearand I have no resolutionsfor self assigned penancefor problems with easy solutions ok, i freaking love these lines here. I really dislike the concept of resolutions because it insinuates that you cannot just change yourself if there is something you don't like. It's more like you have to look back at everything you did this year and hate yourself for your failures. I would rather not be that way.so everybody put your best suit or dress onlet's make believe that we are wealthy for just this oncelighting firecrackers off on the front lawnas thirty dialogues bleed into one to me these lines give me a vision of a simpler time and a more beautiful world.i wish the world was flat like the old daysthen i could travel just by folding a mapno more airplanes, or speedtrains, or freewaysthere'd be no distance that can hold us back. um...yeah....I really need to take a road tripthere'd be no distance that could hold us back (x2)so this is the new year (x4)

  1. xplaycracktheskyx says hello new mogster friend who trusts me :) i have to agree. the dcfc song is used quite often, but it's not one of those that, because of that fact, makes me hate it. it's very poignant and perfect for the occasion. nice breakdown the of the lyrics. i miss the simpler times too, which is sad, because i'm still somewhat young. and AMEN on the rosie thomas! :)
