"Silver Springs" was recorded for, but bumped from, the original running order of Rumours, Fleetwood Mac's follow-up to their eponymous Platinum disc. Watching Nicks here one finds it difficult to believe it was once considered second-rate material. If anything, one suspects it was a bit too powerful, cut a little too close to the bone of its subject Lindsey Buckingham, who seems to have had a say and a half in the direction of the band.

The song isn't just sad - it's soul sick, with a tension that is nearly volcanic when finally released. The chorus is wisely withheld for two and a half minutes, subtly foreshadowed though it may be, and then set aside for an extended guitar solo. When it returns, its sorrow and dread crash in wave after wave.

Buckingham more than makes up for the short shrift given the composition the first time around when it appeared only as a B-side, hidden in the shadow of his own breaking-up-with-Stevie song "Go Your Own Way". He lavishes the track with an intensity that's clearly been accruing interest, just too much a music lover to hide his admiration for this very good song.
