Isis, Jesu and Zozobra at Middle East on St Paddy's Day
about 5 years ago

INTENSITY. This was a night of intensity at the Middle East featuring Isis on tour with Jesu from Birmingham England on their first US tour in support of their latest CD Conqueror and Zozobra.Zozobra started the night with an intense manic set of loud deep thundering music. The deep harmonic sound penetrated ear, brain and body with overtones with lush rattling skullcracking overtones. It was as m

Red Sparowes with William Elliott Whitmore and Caspian at TT the Bear's
about 5 years ago

Caught the Red Sparowes with William Elliott Whitmore and Caspian at TT the Bear's in Cambridge MA on Thursday March 8th, one of the coldest damn nights of the year, but it was hot at TT's. Caspian led off with a great instrumental set. Their music tends to be in the same vein as Pelican and Sparowes with collective ensemble work, no soloing, and ebbs and flows of intense, lush multi-level, mult

Been away for a while

Been a little out of touch with my MOG for several reasons: 1) Going to a few shows, 2) Working on new music (I have a myspace page under the name "krisisthrill") and 3) Working a second job in the CD/DVD department of a Barnes and Noble. I'm going to try more conscientiously to keep up with my MOG, considering some of the cool comments I've gotten recently on a few of my posts. There are a few sh

Mastodon with Converge and the Bronx at the palladium in Worcester MA
over 5 years ago

Mastodon rocks. That's their motto and they do. They are a mammoth act (pun intended) and they deliver bigger than life performance with style, virtuousity and power. Not only do they talk the talk, but they walk the walk, should I say swagger. This is one of the best, and most intelligent, metal bands going. There are brains with the brawn, and brawny and thunderous they can be. They can also be

Sonic Youth at Avalon in Boston Sunday September 3rd
over 5 years ago

One word to describe this show: sublime. They still have it and they know how to use. They can rock when it requires rocking, they can bring it down when it requires bringing down, they can scream, wail, feedback, explode, implode when need be and they can pull it all together into one beautiful mess of sound and song that simply overwhelms. It was a great night.Sometimes funny, sometimes trippy, s

My Music Collection

An irony about MOG is that although I have a fair sized digital collection of music on my hard drive, about two weeks+ worth of non-stop sound, it doesn't touch the 3,000 or more CDs, 200+ cassettes, 200+ 45s and 1,500 LPs that I own and have not digitized (nor do I have digital room for). My collection covers a huge base and a variety of styles and genres and I'm wondering how I can get this a...

Sonic Youth at Avalon, Boston

Looking forward to what I hope will be a cap-off to a great summer of music: Sonic Youth playing at the Avalon in Boston on Sunday night. Smaller clubs frankly are better venues to catch Thurston, Kim and crew in and I'm hoping that this will be a fine bookend to the season. Fall seems to be shaping up nicely and I'll update my calendar of events as time allows. So many blogs etc, so little tim...

Peter Kenagy is a great young trumpeter who currently splits time between Boston, where he teaches at the Continuing Ed and Prep School of New England Conservatory, and New York, where he has been playing in various capacities, including his own small combo. Check out his fine CD "Little Machines" on Fresh Sound New Talent, featuring some other great players from the Boston area, including Jeremy

Mission of Burma at The Paradise, Boston

Mission of Burma did a blistering rocking show at The Paradise on Thursday, July 13th. Truly memorable with a great mix of the old and new, the old songs as vital and energetic as the newer. The crowd was packed and jumping having been energized by contrasting but enjoyable sets by the 2 lead off bands: Hurray for Earth and Neptune. If anyone doubts, though, whether Burma is back, they are back an
