When I first heard Lucy Pearl back in 2000, it brought joy to my ears! Everything I could ever want in a CD. My usual funk, soul, hip hop and rock!Dawn Robinson's voice can hold the highest notes ever imaginable. I am surprised she did not go into the opera scene. But, she would probably be underrated as she still is in her solo efforts.Raphael Saadiq's voice alway reminds me of the classic soul from the 1990s that I enjoyed from Tony Toni Tone. Ali Shaheed Muhammad's beats are classic as he has always given your ears an adventure. He was the beat master with A Tribe Called Quest. The entire album is a gem. If you saw the movie, Love & Basketball, the track, Dance Tonight, is on the soundtrack and in the movie. I think I literally jumped up and danced in the movie theater when I saw it because I could not believe they had my favorite group memorialized in film history. The movie, Love & Basketball was a beautiful tribute to black film for it was the first film by Gina Prince-Bythewood, an African American screenwriter, director and producer. The story is a typical love story but how two pre-teens grow up always having a "friendship" which develops into a beautiful love story.I highly recommend buying Lucy Pearl's one and only album and checking out the movie, Love & Basketball.Lucy Pearl - YouLucy Pearl - Don't Mess With My Man

Really? That is awesome. So many young people here are like who, what, when, who is that? So I am glad at least outside of the USA they are being appreciated!!

There's a London radio station called KissFM and the cool DJs were all over the first album. Then when 'Ghetto Heaven' came out it became a semi-hit. You heard it in all sorts of cafes and shops. Such a wonderful groove - sort of like Soul 2 Soul done Yankee style. :-) Didn't realise that Saddiq came from here (or forgot).

Yeah..Saddiq is from Oakland, California. He was a part of Tone Tony Toni - I probably spelled it all wrong. He has been quiet. I wonder what he is up to now. He totally dominated the charts here in the 1990s with his group. I only have his first CD from his solo album but I heard the rest were awesome. I should consider getting them.
I love Soul II Soul. I played their first album out so much that I broke my audio tape.

Thanks for the teachings - this stuff falls into the back parts of my brain and gathers dust in a corner under a sofa. Of course Saddiq was in TTT. As to his current moves, he produced the newest Joss Stone album - the one she says is her first real album. Haven't heard it though.

Saadiq is an underrated cat. He has done loads of good work, for and with a a lot o' folks. I worked for the distributor that released a couple of his more recent solo records. Good stuff. A musicians musician.

Thanks for the heads up, Cody B! I need to get them. I just have so much music sometimes I wonder where I get the time to listen. But, I listen to music more so than watching tv.
FlowerPower: Dance Tonight is my jimmy jam! I love that song so much that when I was driving to school I would automatically listen to Dance Tonight so I could be mentally prepared to deal with the craziness in school. =P

Saadiq as Ray Ray is kind of a nouveau blaxploitation concept album
All the Hits at the House Of Blues was the more successful of the 2. He didn't get a whole lot of radio, but they were nice records.

Oh sweet! Thank you. Maybe I will just get All the Hits at the House of Blues.
Blaxplotiation!! He he -- man do I have stories. All I have to say is Johnny Pate and Curtis Mayfield and Issac Hayes.
I actually danced with Issac Hayes. He is so crazy and fun! This was in 2002. He was at my friend's wedding. I was shocked to see him there. I was like - Mr. Shaft?!
Thank you!
Cody B says
Not that I know, but Mr.Hayes seems like a mellow guy. always good to hear good things about folks who are famous. Kool points for you,Serenity.

He was mad cool. He even was doing the Electric Slide with us so that I what gave him total cool points for me too! I think there is a video floating around of the wedding. I need to ask my friend for a copy but she would probably be upset if it gets onto youtube so I better leave it alone ! =)
