MUSIC SIGNPOSTS ON THE WEB'S LONELY ROAD

I'm one of those who think that the first New Pornographers album was quite good but each subsequent one has been successively worse. But my hat goes off to the band's recent "challenge to the YouTube nation" (their wording) which is part of the promo campaign for their most recent album Challengers. The challenge (see it here) was: "Sing a New Pornographers song in the style of Michael McDonald and video yourself doing it." (Michael McDonald is a white R&B singer who's also served as the lead vocalist for the Doobie Brothers.) The contest winner has just been announced and I have to say it's pretty awesome:

Also consider the description that attends the entry:

"Michael McDonald's first music video (and Billboard chart success), "It's Only Divine Right", became the most influential track of the 1970s. His smooth vocal stylings, coupled with guest performances by Kenny Loggins and Christopher Cross, seemed to pave the way for 80s adult contemporary music. Also, the idea of a "music video" was revolutionary in its own right, and McDonald experiments with one of the earliest known instances of product placement. This song was later covered by Canadian powerpop group, The New Pornographers. Another interesting fact: McDonald hasn't replaced the phone featured in this video since it was filmed."

That's the spirit!

Half Jerry Garcia/Half Captain Daryl Dragon, but all Michael Mc. Yup, that's pretty damn funny.

that hurt me. I actually watched the whole thing. I must admit I am neither a New Pornographers fan nor a Michal McDonald fan. I am in pain and may now need to go to the emergency room.

I think he got it WAY wrong. He's doing an imitation of Captain & Tenille combined, not MM, hahahaha. If this is the winner then there must've been some seriously sorry entries.

Good point about Daryl Dragon. (Other entries, not many, here.)

Something useless from a big bad company. An iPhone, I think.

So wait, was the guy lip syncing or singing? Because if he was singing I think it was a pretty decent impression.

That description is all wrong. All you need to know is that he sings Yah Mo B There. Oh, and On My Own, with Patti Labelle. He is responsible for all the time you spent alone in your room as a child while your parents were in their room with the door closed. Countless rap artists have ripped his beats for their songs. And his eyes are so blue they are scary. :)

See all this I couldn't help but think of McDonald's Doobies hit "What a Fool Believes."

I have to say it's a brilliant cover. The guy does a devastating imitation not only of McDonald's vocals, but also, as Mike the Knife observes, kinda mashes up "What a Fool Believes" there. Maybe goes on a little long, and the action is clearly in the song rather than the visuals (love the egg chair, though), but still, this guy definitely understands the '70's. He looks kinda like the guy from The Apples In Stereo under the beard. Hmm...

That is really funny. I love the piano keys having the notes on them.

To answer your question, yes about the ketut meaning foxes, but I chose it from my nickname when I was living in Bali. It means fourth born or something. I get home and my aunt thought I was learning Finnish cause of my email handle and told me. ( I am 100% Finn, but don't know many words being born in USA)

Thanks for the welcome.
