For your judgment: new Editors single

Posted over 2 years ago
"Smokers Outside The Hospital Doors," the first single from the upcoming Editors album An End Has A Start, has begun making rounds on mp3 blogs. A MOG search turned up no mp3 of the song (dustfinger1210 posted about the single), so here you go. As much as I hate to say it as someone who really enjoyed Editors' debut album, I'm quite disappointed. There are a few nicely swooping vocal melody lines, but for the most part the song sounds way too much like Coldplay [shudder].

  3. mickimicki says Hm. I didn't know the Editors... the singer reminds me a _little_ bit of Ian Curtis..

  4. Augusts1 says I'd agree Pekka, this is sounding too close to Coldplay territory whereas their debut sounded so much like Joy Division/Interpol. Between my Joy Division/Interpol/She Wants Revenge obsessions I didn't have much room leftover for The Editors!

  5. Anna says Thank you, Pekka. I gave this many listens. I like it. It reminds me more of Bullets, than it does of Coldplay. The guitars in both songs almost sound the same. Unless Bullets reminds you of Coldplay as well, so we're saying the same thing. The piano in 2:57 - 3:11 is the part of the song that reminds me of Coldplay, but I don't think I would have gone there if someone hadn't pointed out a similarity to Coldplay before I heard the song. This part may be saved by the basslines that follow. And the title Smokers Outside The Hospital Doors felt like a slap in my face (this doesn't have to be a bad thing, just memories-arousing). A bit too personal to me.

  7. Neill says Been getting played on the radio here all week and I like it. Unfortunately the Coldplay comparisons keep getting mentioned.....:(

  8. nicki says Remix it to take out the keyboards and piano, and you may just save it.

  9. funkybarb says Maybe it will grow with a few more listens but my initial response is ... meh. I don't know about the Coldplay comparisons but it does sound less like their initial outing, which for my taste is a bad thing.

  10. Puffmagic says It does garner some Coldplay feelings but it does share that same "Canon in D" chord progression that a million other songs share. I still like it though cause I'm a sucker for big chords.
