WE DO THE MASHED POTATO AND THE FUNKY CHICKEN

This week's theme: "Show canceled"

Posted over 2 years ago
The Fratellis(Harlow's, Sacramento, 4/29/07)

I can keep this concert review very short. As I walk the four blocks over to Harlow's to arrive at the venue at 9:15pm, what do I find but a "show canceled" note at the door and a salsa dancing lesson proceeding in full strut. First Placebo cancels on Wednesday. Now this (decidedly less exciting and significant, but still potentially fun) event comes to nought as well. I think I'll put "Midnight Blues" by the Detroit Cobras on repeat, sip some whiskey, and try hard to shed a bitter tear. What a fucking week.

  1. Dale says That's awful rotten luck, P. Nothing I say will take the pain away, but hopefully the Detroit Cobras will help. :'(

  2. Pseudo Cyborg says "try hard to shed a bitter tear." LMAO Still, though, that completely blows.

  3. mutterimieli says So sorry Pekka... Sac can't fill the house so bands tend to cancel a lot. My niece when to see Taste of Chaos and 30 Seconds to Mars decided to no show because they didn't sell out months prior at the Boardwalk :(

  4. 1234chainsaw says Oddly enough, these are my first cancellations in almost five years of living in Sacramento. But you’re right, Jill, that Sacramentans are pretty lame when it comes to filling the house. A few times the show has gone on only because the band has heroically put on a show for a small audience, like when Mark Lanegan played to about 40 people and Pernice Brothers to about 50 people. (Both were Monday night shows in December 2003. Ouch.) Dale: Thanks. DC are definitely helping. So is the single malt. Also helping is the stupendously good Garnet Mimms original of "As Long As I Have You" (the cover of which so far strikes me as the best track on the new DC record). Pseudo: Thanks for getting the joke. Feel better already. :D

  5. Augusts1 says If it makes you feel any better The Fratellis set at Coachella wasn't too impressive. I'd never heard anything by them but had heard about them on Mog & M. They didn't keep my attention whatsoever & I tried to like them. I'm pretty easy to please if you have a good tune & perform it well, but they didn't do it for me. Placebo would be a drag to miss cause they are good & have some interesting songs. From what I've seen of live clips they put on a great show. Sorry to hear they canceled w/in the same week. That'd bum me out too. I'm sure the whiskey helps though. Hope this coming week goes better for you.

  6. Anna says Oh fuckshittery bollocks. I'm really sorry to hear that. Did they cancel because of low ticket sales? I hope you at least attended the salsa lesson. You never know when those moves might come in handy. You might find yourself in the position where you'll have to salsa dance your troubles away :)

  7. Mike the Knife says Damn, 'saw. Bad deal. But you'll catch 'em next time (said the guy who's still peeved at missing last Thursday's Winehouse/Klaxons double-bill on his own fturf).

  9. jenny says So sorry, Pekka, hate it when that happens. (I was heartbroken last Friday when David Kilgour cancelled his US tour on very little notice...didn't find out until the Punks opened for Yo La Tengo. Weird to be bitterly disappointed and hardly able to appreciate YLT, who were solid as always, but I just couldn't get into it.) But onward anyway, right? There will be others.

  10. Rawkkiddoh says That stinks, I have had a few show canceled moments in my life and they are never very fun

  11. etcvisitor says look on the bright side, you live four blocks away from a venue... as long as this isnt par for the course at that venue.

  12. Pseudo Cyborg says "You might find yourself in the position where you’ll have to salsa dance your troubles away " As ridiculous as that sounds, there's a bit truth in that. When living in San Francisco some years ago, sometimes I'd decide on a whim to go see a swing/jazz band play just to knock back a couple and to find a pretty girl to twirl around for a couple hours. Nothing more, nothing less. It can do wonders.

  13. goodmusiconly says Sorry Pekka, what a drag! Thank god for whiskey (and wine and beer) and good music ... the remedy for just about any situation gone awry. Hope this week goes better for you :)

  14. eastvanmungo says Sadly, for myself, The Detroit Cobras are always the first band to come to mind when "show cancelled" is mentioned. The never manage to make it across the US / Canada border (although somehow they managed to play Toronto at least once).

I think they've probably stopped trying.

  15. chucky says I'm not sure I'd want to see a band that cancelled because there weren't enough tickets sold. Seems kind of assholish to me.

  16. 1234chainsaw says Thanks for the sentiments, you all, from the burst-of-laughter-inducing "fuckshittery bollocks" (thanks, Anna), via my shit-someone-had it-as-bad-as-I-did commiseration I felt about Kilgour canceling (sorry, Jenny) and indeed someone-had-it-worse (Kevin, thinking of your post here; not commenting doesn't mean I didn't feel it, hard), to the like-minded healing techniques (thanks, Erin). Anna and Pseudo: Instead of salsa, I'd prefer to pogo my troubles away. Now all I need is show that doesn't get canceled . . . oh, shit. Eastvanmungo: I've never yet managed to catch the Detroit Cobras live either. That will be remedied this summer. I hope you'll have a chance to do the same. Just to be clear, I don't know if "not enough tickets sold" was the reason (excuse, whatever) for the Fratellis cancellation. (It wasn't for Placebo.) If it was, then I heartily agree that Fratellis can go and fuck themselves. But maybe they just had too much "fun" at Coachella the previous night to make it to the show . . . which would be merely unprofessional.
