Some writing work lies ahead today, but I spent the languid hours of the morning making a mix to a new colleague of mine. This guy is pretty cool. Apart from his significant academic work, he's a vinyl head in his mid-fifties whose main music collector passion is original pressings of Blue Note jazz, but who is interested and knowledgeable about music in general. One night last week, as we were meeting up to talk about various things over a bottle of red Burgundy, we resolved to exchange some music. I think he's going to hook me up with some old acoustic blues that I don't yet have. He asked me for a mix of stuff that I've been listening to lately. With a few exceptions (to include a few pertinent older tunes but leave out better known stuff that he would know) that's what I did, although I tried to match my selections with what I think he might like and so left out some punk and stuff. (To pre-empt Anna: Here's why I didn't put any Placebo on. This man and his daughter, who's fifteen I think, take each other to shows: she to introduce him to stuff she likes, he to educate her about rock music more broadly. They're going to Coachella together because her two favorite bands are Placebo and Rage Against the Machine. Anyway, a couple of years ago he took her to a Placebo signing at a record store in LA, where they lived then, and he got Molko to sign two of his own Placebo records on vinyl and to pose for a picture. So he's got his Placebo down. I told you this guy is pretty cool.) I like this mix, so I'll put the track list in the comments. Here's a video of one of the tracks to start up your day.
