Mix CD themes

Posted over 2 years ago
I haven't made a CD mix in a long while, but while rummaging through various mixes from the past the other day, I realized that pretty much all of my favorites were built around a theme that's reflected in the song titles. I also enjoyed coming up with titles for my mixes. What's the theme of your favorite CD mix? Or else your favorite title? Regarding titles, I was pretty happy with "Electric Heartache" and "Absolute Downers" (you'd never guess the themes of these ones...). Regarding the theme, I especially liked (and still do) a mix called "Q&A" from about three years ago. The song titles make for a nice (and appropriately over the top) narrative.1. Do You Love Me? – Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds2. You Don’t Love Me Yet – Roky Erickson3. Could You Love Me? – Denise James4. Maybe Someday – The Cure 5. What Am I Supposed To Do? – Papas Fritas6. Call Me – Blondie7. What Difference Does It Make? – The Smiths8. You’re Gonna Miss Me – 13th Floor Elevators9. What Did You Expect? – Archers Of Loaf10. Whips & Furs – The Vibrators11. What Do I Get? – Buzzcocks 12. Barbed Wire Love – Stiff Little Fingers13. Is This Real? – Wipers14. Like A Daydream – Ride15. What Will You Do When Your Suntan Fades? – Beulah16. Sleeping Aides and Razorblades – The Exploding Hearts17. How Does It Feel To Feel – The Creation18. Hollow As a Bone – Cowboy Junkies19. Why Are You Being So Reasonable Now? – The Wedding Present20. Beginning To See the Light – The Velvet Underground21. (What’s So Funny ‘Bout) Peace, Love and Understanding – Elvis Costello22. We Live As We Dream, Alone – Gang Of Four

  1. Sureshot says I used to make mix tapes on a regular basis but since the advent of CD's the desire has worn off. My main two mixtape series were titled 'Rebellious Jukebox' and 'Shoegazing For Beginners'. I love the Q&A theme, will have to try that.

  2. Anna says I love the idea of themes & yours here is *so* clever. I'm not mix experienced. "My fav one":http://mog.com/Anna/blog_post/9909#write-comment was made in collaboration with the MOG crew :)

  3. Torch says I'm in the middle of refinishing my "Leadfoot Remix" - the collection songs that make you roll down the windows, crank the radio, triple your blood pressure, and lose your voice! I haven't updated it completely, but will definitely MOG about it once its completed.

  5. Marta says I usually make stories with my song titles too. But Q&A is a great theme. I may have to nick it off you (or possibly make my own copy)

  6. Smooth Hegemon says Excellent, excellent topic. I am a big fan of weird playlist themes. Past endeavors have included: The Color Mix Animal Farm Hot Chocolate for My Ears Spicy Chai (Bollywood remixes) Jossie's Jamboree Songs that end in "ing"

  7. 1234chainsaw says Hegemon: songs that end in "ing" -- a great idea. Another mix I did that I liked was called "1". It consisted in songs with one-word titles. Torch: I'm definitely curious to hear what songs you think have the effect of your "Leadfoot Mix"; I want music that does just that for me (like the title, too)! Sureshot: you should make a post of its own about "Shoegazing for Beginners". The Magnet magazine did a similar feature story a couple of years ago that was OK but not great. You could probably do better. What sort of stuff was on "Rebellious Jukebox" (good title)?

  8. Marta says The 'ing' theme is very popular so I hear... *Boys Night Out* did it with their Trainwreck album (which also told a story). 1. Introducing 2. Dreaming 3. Waking 4. Sentencing 5. Medicating 6. Purging 7. Relapsing 8. Recovering 9. Composing 10. Disintegrating 11. Healing 12. Dying

  9. Sureshot says Rebellious Jukebox was basically anything loud bar metal. Mainly Punk and New Wave. The shoegazing mix will have to wait until I buy a new turntable as most of it is on vinyl.

  10. chucky says 9. What Did You Expect? – Archers Of Loaf 10. Whips & Furs – The Vibrators I *love* that, haha. My favorite title so far is the Mog Wars mix I got from kate "a woman's place in the dj booth."

I've made five mixes which all had one word titles and themes

Torch had all songs that were about fire and heartbreak, mostly sad.

Moonlight had more sad songs about heartbreak and rain.

Heartbeat was all upbeat love songs.

Choice was actually about love and death.

Imagine was kinda like a what-if mix.
