WHERE THE HOKEY POKEY "IS" WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT

Surprise

Posted over 2 years ago
My mom and brother have made long, long trips from their locations to visit me for the holidays. We've never been big on Christmas, but it's good to have all three of us together (for the first time since summer 2005) and have them check out how I live. Anyway, my mom couldn't exactly be called someone who is knowledgeable about or has a particularly discerning taste in music. So it's been a pleasant surprise to hear her ask "Who is this? I like it!" when Amy Winehouse, El Perro Del Mar, and the Bawlers disc of Tom Waits's Orphans have been on in the car or on my stereo. Way to go, mom! I plan to try Richard Hawley, too, but I think I'll wait until some other time to try out stuff like The Real Losers on her.

  1. Cody B says I just got the Amy Winehouse album and I was impressed with her voice and conviction to the style. Most neo-soulers lean toward a 70's sound but Amy really captures a 60's vibe without sounding like a tribute act. Great props to her and her producers. Enjoy your holiday!

  4. Robmo says My mother is a poet, published, and is interested in folk tradition. I got her the new Joanna Newsom record, brilliant imagery and the stuff about the meteor showers will keep anyone occupied for hours. I also got her a collection of Crooked Trail music. For those of you that don't know the Crooked Trail is an area in south western Virginia that is truly the cradle of Bluegrass music. My mother loved the clean cut fairly homogenized early sixties folk scene so I'm curious how she will react to the real deal.

  5. thill says i finally broke down and bought my mom Jimmy Buffet's the Ultimate Collection....i felt dirty. my mom likes the most awful folk stuff from the 60's--New Christy Ministrels and such. I think Robmo's mom and mine were into the same kind of stuff. Not to totally dirty my mother's name she is the person that turned me on to Bob Dylan! Have a great time spending time with your mother and brother. Hyvää Joulua ja Onnellista Uutta Vuotta!
