WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Kaiser Chiefs giveaway

Posted about 3 years ago
During house cleaning I discovered that somehow I possess two copies of Employment by Kaiser Chiefs. I have no idea how this has come to be; I'm not even a huge fan. All I can say is that however it happened, it must have been legal. The principle that there can be too much of a good thing tells me to get rid of the extra copy. I'd like to donate it to one of my trusted moggers who help my bouts of procrastination with their smart and interesting posts. It would be an unexpected bonus if you in turn delighted my life with a mix, but I just want the poor wee thing to find a good home. Help me.

  2. 1234chainsaw says Anna, you don't have a physical copy of that record? I thought that having one was what entitled you to say that you have employment if someone asked you what you do. It's yours if you want it.

  3. Anna says ha ha ha (never thought of that, I'm totally using it) No, I only have the mp3s. If you nobody else wants it, I'd be happy to take it :D

  4. LambCurry666 says But Anna lives SO FAR away. If you give it to me, I promise to tell her all about it. So...what are you procrastinating? I can help with it, I am sure. I am an excellent procrastinator and a total know-it-all.

  5. 1234chainsaw says OK, back from a run. Let's see . . . well, sorry Lamb, but Anna got there first. I'm scrupulously fair that way. Of course, I'm open to be convinced otherwise by good arguments. You say: "Anna lives SO FAR away." But distance is, in itself, morally irrelevant. You also say: "If you give it to me, I promise to tell her all about it." Whoa, if I let that fly, I predict a riot.

  6. Anna says Shame on you, Ian. :P Damn right you predict a Greek, mayhem, havoc, riot.

  8. LambCurry666 says BTW- I don't think you should let threat of violence sway your decision. My argument wasn't a moral one but a pragmatic one. I live in the US, I believe you live in the US. Shipping to my home will probably cost you $2. Shipping to Greece will be much more. In fact, you might find that the cost benefit ration is quite off kilter - it might be more financially sound, in the end, to send her the money so that she may purchase the CD from Thessaloniki (or whatever the record stores are called there). If you give it to me I will describe it in such vivid detail to Anna that she will believe she actually heard it. Moreover, technically speaking, a cd sent from the US to Greece requires payment of a $15 dollar duty/VAT. I am not saying that I would snitch, but I am not not saying it. Does your moral code allow for the violation of international law?

  9. 1234chainsaw says I did find out about postage beforehand to check pragmatic considerations like relative costs and benefits. Although obviously it was more than US domestic rate, it was considerably less than the cost of a new CD in Greece, even with a couple of other burns I threw in. I declared the value of the goods on the customs form. If VAT is charged at the Greek end (which easily might not happen), it should be 19% or so. (Where are you getting this $15 thing from?) That'd befall on Anna. In all, cost/benefit considerations weren't weighty enough to undermine Anna's moral claim as the first responder. Besides, even though EU may look like a mess with different nations pulling in different directions on various issues, really Europeans stick together on weighty issues like this one. Really. I am, however, in awe of your alleged music description skills. I'd pay to hear that.

  10. LambCurry666 says OK, I will not even go into all of the heuristics and biases that clearly went into your faulty decision-making process - alas, your mind is obviously made up. Mea culpa, the $15 charge I suggested was somewhat made up, but that does not excuse your egregious empty moralizing...why do you hate America so much?

  11. 1234chainsaw says Surely you're jesting, sir! But in case you're not: I didn't check beforehand, but I think (can't be sure, of course) that Tversky & Kahneman's prospect theory can explain the process. Basically, in this case my reference point is set by certain moral considerations (fairness, in particular) and fairness costs get assigned a higher negative utility than monetary costs. There were no significant probability considerations here, so that rules out many of the most typically cited heuristics and biases. I also see no foothold for, say, risk-aversion or other framing effects. My charitable interpretation of your last two sentences is that you're trying to be Colbert . . . not quite there yet.

  12. LambCurry666 says Brent Colbert? Why the unmitigated gall! K & T have been roundly exposed as charlatans. No one respects their work.

  13. LambCurry666 says I can't keep this up...K&T are psychologist rock stars and I love them.

  14. 1234chainsaw says I kinda figured, since your previous comment was so over the top. One might disagree with T&K on finer points about interpreting the data and experimental design, or on the psychological theories that they formulate to explain the data, but that's just normal stuff of science. You don't engage in that sort of exchange with somebody you consider a charlatan. And the last I checked nobody who is to be taken seriously was complaining that Kahneman didn't deserve his (quasi-)Nobel in economics.
