Sunday Under Covers :: Al Green does The Beatles

Posted about 1 year ago
Here's something sweet for this Sunday morning: Al Green doing up "I Want To Hold Your Hand" by The Beatles. The original hit me with its infectious greatness when I was about 10. But Green transforms the song's teenage innocence and nostalgia into something sexy and funky. The horn lines and that swelling in the bridge are enough to make you want to stay under those covers...

[Just to point out the obvious: it would be a fair point to argue that this is more a new creation than a cover. The melody and chord progression are completely different from the original. EDIT: I was wrong about the chord progression being different, as Ivylander's comment gently points out. I really should know better than to use words like 'obvious'...]

  1. ivylander says This is one of those foolproof tracks that works on any mixtape. He was born to sing that high note on "hand." Though, to sound a pedantic note, his is pretty much the original chord progression - even in the bridge, which most bands get wrong....

  2. 1234chainsaw says Ah, you're right! Having just double-checked against the original, the basic chord progression is pretty much intact. So I'll take that hasty claim back. As "pedantic" is my middle name, I appreciate the correction!

  4. Celia Chavez says oh thank you for this! nothing like having Rev. Al preach on a Sunday morning. and i like pedantic, actually, so please don't apologize for wanting to be correct about the details, and being humble enough to correct oneself.

  10. 1234chainsaw says Benjimon: it's at least on the extended reissue of Green Is Blues (released 2003, I believe) and the 3CD various artists box Hi Times: The Hi Records R&B Years. It might be also on Al Green's own Hi Records compilation.
