(I was unable to log on to http://mog.com/Remembering_Crashpryor, so here I go instead.)

The way I tend to react to a tragedy like we've been processing in the past days is that words feel to me like empty chatter. (To others, they are indispensable; we differ in our ways.) So I've been quiet. Likewise, I pay my respects to Chris in the form of instrumental jazz. This one starts from a familiar place but goes off and develops into something distinctive and insightful. Chris's writing and personal interaction were, in my limited experience, like that kind of jazz. The interesting, surprising, and immensely rewarding kind. (Sometimes a bit lengthy, too, but that's a sin I'm glad to have shared with Chris.)

Chris, you are sorely missed. You, Micki, and your family are in our thoughts.

A fitting verse from the Nick Drake original:

When the game's been fought
You speed the ball across the court.
Lost much sooner than you would have thought
Now the game's been fought
.

  4. 1234chainsaw says Do you whatever you deem fit with cross-posting. (I tried many times, but even after clearing browser cache etc., trying to log in gave me "user name or password invalid"; but it could be that someone else was already logged in.) I've also been spinning Wipers - a band we both love and esteem.

  5. Mike the Knife says As eloquent as any of your other posts, Pekka - and just as invaluable. With every MOGger who pays his or her respects, it becomes even more evident how well regarded Chris was in this community.

  6. mickimicki says Dear Pekka... thanks... your bit about the sin of lengthiness makes me smile... reminds me we used to have a game of "writer/editor" since I'm a translater, so I habitually check every word, which he thought was the way of the "evil editor", the writer's natural "enemy"... Beautiful song (except it breaks my heart, but what's another crack)...Chris is gonna love it. The verse is dead on. Way sooner than we thought. Oh my, oh my... Wipers... I'm too afraid to even listen to them now, I EMCD'd Chris with them... that's too big a crack for now... For a long while I'd been without words... but this now... If I keep this in, it's gonna break me. Gotta fight.. that's what Chris would approve of, too.

  9. 1234chainsaw says I know what you mean, bloodtea. Seeing Mehldau in a small basement jazz club in NYC is one of my best live experiences too.
