Please do not think of Blink-182. Today's entry in my series of song duels (What song does hearing some expression trigger in one's mind?) pits Muse's explosive approach to the topic of Stockholm Syndrome against Yo La Tengo's more fretful one.
When YLT occasionally play this song live, Ira Kaplan tends intentionally to butcher the guitar solo, so I guess he doesn't much like the song. But it's got a certain moody quality that appeals to me.
Muse, on the other hand, take no prisoners, if I may put it that way. The song is bombastic and tastefully excessive in Muse's own charming way. But, sorry, it's not among their best tunes. I've lived longer with the Yo La Tengo tune and played it myself. That may be why it (and not even the psychological disorder after which the songs are named) is what I tend to think of first when I hear people talking about Stockholm Syndrome. Yes, "summer's what you make it." Duel over!
