The Late and Great Me - Johnny PayCheck

Posted over 5 years ago
The late and great Johnny PayCheck was one of country music's greatest vocalists. It is rumoured that the legendary George Jones developed his remarkable singing style off Johnnys' classic stylings (this story came about because both these guys played together in George's band in the late 50's / early 60's). But Possum has denied this on more than one occassion. I guess that this is just an urban myth PayCheck groupies like me cling to in the vain hope of getting Johnny just a little more attention and maybe helping him become just a ittle better known.Although PayCheck is most widely known as the "Shove it" guy, (yes, HE'S the guy who sung that song, not the Dead Kennedys!) Johnny PayCheck did lots of great country stuff in his earlier days. His, Johnny PayChecks', Little Darlin' recordings are a great example of classic country honky tonk from the '60's. With probably the best example of PayChecks work from this period being the "The Real Mr Heartache" disc released in 1996, showcasing Johnnys' music from his days when he recorded on his label Little Darlin'.Since Johnnys' untimely death in 2003 several discs have been released showcasing more of Johnnys early work, which in my opinion is his best music. My tribute to Johnny PayCheck can be found here - http://johnny-paycheck.com

  1. morst says Of course, David Allan Coe actually WROTE "Take This Job and Shove It" and was pretty P.O.'d at Paycheck over Johnny not giving him credit when he performed it, and acting like he had written it himself!

  2. 10Gallons says That is quite right. You must have DAC's audio biography as well. It was a strange relationship between PayCheck and Coe. On his audio biography, Whoopsy Daisy, he is pretty peeved about PayCheck making good with 'Shove It', but it didn't seem to upset him too much as he (DAC) then went on to appear in the film (Take This Job and Shove It) with PayCheck, (although they are only very small parts for both artists), as well as in some other movies over time.
