I'm not the worlds most articulate writer, I'm not a worldly authority on music, I'm not a highly educated master of anything but I do know good music and music that is delivered from within when I hear it.
Well they tell me it was 1972 to 1974 when it all came blaring through the speakers of radios, transistors and wirelesses around Australia.
It was a fairly raucuous uproar but gee did it have kick and heart. It was Billy Thorpe singing one of Australia's best known and most beloved rock and roll tunes, 'Most People I Know Think That I'm Crazy'.
At the time I would have been around 10 years old, but I could tell that this tune was not just another glam rock piece of crud, it had, for want of another term, BALLS .
This guy really kicked ass. I know that term is a most overused, and now retarded phrase, but in 1970-whatever-it-was, it fitted, or is that fat, the bill perfectly.
'Most People I Know' is a still a ball tearing song. Sorry if the terms or phrases used here are offensive, but music is about passion and the passion is flowing.
I never got to see Billy Thorpe in concert, I don't have any of his CD's or records, I don't have anything, not even a picture of the dude on my XP desktop (I got Waylon), but Billy Thorpe was supposed to be around forever. Why not? He always had been. He was there when I was 10 years old and new to radio and rock and roll, why wouldn't he be around when I was 80 and about to clock out?
His music was powerful and authorative. To me he was Australian music because of what happened at Sunbury in 1972 or was it 74, I'm not sure, but Billy Thorpe was like electricity and Mum and Dad, they're always there, why wouldn't they and he always be there?
Billy Thorpe was Australian Music in a way, because he introduced me to it and to rock and roll, as well as to that side of life you don't know about when you're 10 years old in 1972 or was it '74?
You now Elvis died in 1977 and I thought "Oh, that's not good".
Billy Thorpe died in 2007 and I think "Aaarrggh. What are we gonna do now. Bugger it, that's bloody aweful".
I hate death.
Billy Thorpe, an Australian Great.

Well It is coming up to Christmas and Tom T Hall is GREAT !. So ...
In some of my songs I have casually mentioned
The fact that I like to drink beer
This little song is more to the point
Roll out the barrel and lend me your ears

(chorus)
I like beer. it makes me a jolly good fellow
I like beer. it helps me unwind and sometimes it makes me feel mellow (makes him feel mellow)
Whiskeys too rough, champagne costs too much, vodka puts my mouth in gear
This little refrain should help me explain as a matter of fact I like beer
(he likes beer)
My wife often frowns when were out on the town
And Im wearing a suit and a tie
Shes sipping vermouth and she thinks Im uncouth
When I yell as the waiter goes by
(chorus)
Last night I dreamed that I passed from the scene
And I went to a place so sublime
Aw, the water was clear and tasted like beer
Then they turned it all into wine (awww)
I like beer. it makes me a jolly good fellow
I like beer. it helps me unwind and sometimes it makes me feel mellow (makes him feel mellow)
Whiskeys too rough, champagne costs too much, and vodka puts my mouth in gear
Aw, this little refrain should help me explain as a matter of fact I love beer
(yes, he likes beer)
David Allan Coe.

I got a lot of time for this bloke. Some may say he's full of shit, but if that's the case, he's been full of shit for 35 years.
Gee, he's put out some great stuff.
And for those who think Country is just bubblegum and hicks, you go take a listen to some of DAC 's stuff it's rock and roll, soul and no bullshit music. And if that aint enough, go to one of his live shows and look at this way out 60+ year old Country music artist and then come back and tell me that Country is plain flat and boring!
Let me say his name again. DAVID ALLAN COE .

"Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs were an Australian pop and rock group dating from the mid-sixties. The group enjoyed huge success in the mid-1960s, but split in 1967. They re-emerged in the early seventies to become one of the most popular Australian hard-rock bands of the period. Thorpe died from a heart attack in Sydney on February 28th, 2007.
In early 1972 the Aztecs released what became their biggest hit, the song which became Thorpe's signature tune -- "Most People I Know (Think That I'm Crazy)", a song now widely regarded as one of the classics of Australian rock. It was a huge national hit for the new Aztecs, going Top 5 in all cities (there was no national chart at this time), propelled to the top of charts by the band's triumphant appearance at the legendary 1972 Sunbury Music Festival. Thorpe himself sees this as a pivotal moment in the development of Australian music, thanks to the promoters' decision to feature an all-Australian lineup, rather than relying on imported stars."
Good Stuff, Great Music :)
Thanks 10Gallon's,
RIP Billy...
Yeah you bet mate. The 70's were great for music. I'm gonna miss Billy. The world is falling apart - or I'm getting old?
